Business Incubator Project Moves Forward in Marengo Co.

By George McDonald

From the West Alabama Newsroom--  A new business incubator project in Marengo County is trying to create jobs by helping entrepreneurs and small businesses succeed.

The small business incubator will be housed in the old Linden Armory property.

Program officials say it will promote economic development and job growth in the county by providing assistance to beginner small businesses. They say sharing space and resources at the incubator can improve a business's chance to grow and succeed.

The incubator is a joint project of the Marengo County Commission, the Economic Development Authority and the Extension Service.

"I think one of the answers in the Black Belt of Alabama is to encourage entrepreneurship, let's help people grow their business," said Extension Coordinator Kathryn Friday. "Nobody knows better what you need than the people who live here."

"One of the things that we identified was that there was not really a one-stop shop for people in Marengo County to  have a place to come when they have an idea, or they have a product or service that they want to bring to market. So, we're going to be able to provide the outlet for them."

The project is funded by a $250,000 dollar grant through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs and matching funds through the Marengo County Commission.
