Maxwell Air Force Base closes its gates for several hours after security officials find a package that tested positive for explosives.

That package was about the size of a box of blank checks. The gates were closed for three hours today. During that time, hundreds of cars tried to enter the gates, some people who even had family members inside the base.

Alabama News Network exclusive video shows multiple police cars with K-9 units on scene, ambulances and fire trucks all inside the gates at Maxwell Air Force Base after security officials found a suspicious package at the post office. The gates of the front entrance were also blocked.

"I was trying to get into the base to meet my husband and go shopping at the commissary and that gate is closed?" Said military spouse, Sarah Edmondston. Her car was one of hundreds of others that were diverted for three hours until security could identify what was in the package.

"We do have some equipment in the post office and they have certain screening procedures that they follow for the mail. In the package [that] they received on the base one of the packages and it came out as a potential explosive," Said Commander of Security Forces Squadron, Major Ben Jacobson.

That's when the Montgomery Police Explosives ordinance demolition team arrived on scene and performed x-ray scans on the package. Maxwell security officials say they evacuated all the surrounding buildings on base.

"Montgomery EOD was here to assist. They came in and examine the package and it was actually determined to contain a harmless foodstuff. No explosives were found so that area was determined to be safe," Said Public Affairs Officer, Dave Huxsoll.

While it was only food, Edmontson says she's glad precautions were taken.

"I don't live on the base, so it's not it's not so much of an issue," Said Edmonston. "Anywhere... it could be a problem."

The base returned to normal around 1 p.m. Friday.
