About one in every 3 Americans has trouble falling asleep or staying asleep through the night. Insomnia can cause fatigue, anxiety, loss of productivity and financial stress. Now, a new study shows it may increase your risk of heart attack and stroke.

Researchers in Tawain included more than 43 thousand participants who were 45-years of age or older. Nearly 11 thousand were diagnosed with insomnia.

They followed the group for an average of 4 years collecting data on heart attack and stroke events.

A total of 424 heart attacks and 3,307 strokes were recorded. About 2 percent of those in the insomnia group suffered a heart attack compared to less than one percent in the non-insomnia group.

Slightly more than 11 percent of those with insomnia had a stroke versus six and a half percent of the non-insomniacs.
