Soy and Menopause Symptoms

By Health Day

..the answer is no.

The study, published in the journal Menopause, included data on more than 1,600 women who were followed for over ten years. None had experienced menopausal symptoms at the start.

Each year, participants reported on the frequency of hot flashes and night sweats and at three different points during the decade, they were asked to fill out detailed questionnaires about their dietary habits.

Researchers focused on the consumption of phytoestrogens found in tofu, soy milk and other soy-based foods.

Phytoestrogens mimic the effects of estrogen in the body. Since estrogen levels drop during menopause, the investigators hypothesized that a diet high in phytoestrogens would reduce menopause symptoms.

But, the study showed soy products did not prevent the onset of hot flashes and night sweats.
